Individual Mental Health Counseling Services

Counselors provide one-on-one mental health counseling to support students experiencing difficulties, some of which may include:

CPLA counselors are a trusted and capable source of support for the entire school community. They create partnerships with students, parents and teachers to help students achieve their goals. They work with parents to improve communication and provide interventions and guidance. They promote student success in the classroom by focusing on the critical connection between a student’s mental health and their ability to effectively take advantage of opportunities to learn. Counselors empower students to become their own advocates.
During counseling sessions counselors utilize a variety of evidence-based practices to:
  • Improve communication and coping skills
  • Strengthen students’ sense of self, self-esteem and self-efficacy
  • Promote positive behavior changes
  • Identify goals and effective paths to achieve them
  • Help parents to support their children’s needs
  • Emotionally process and grieve loss and painful family changes

Classroom Presentations

CPLA counselors provide classroom presentations tailored for each grade-level, and specific to the needs and issues of each individual school community.  The presentations may include:
  • Anti-Bullying Techniques
  • Anger Management
  • Stress Management
  • Relationship Building Skills

Professional Development

CPLA is partnering with local universities to create professional development workshops to assist teachers and school personnel in recognizing signs and symptoms of the most common mental health concerns in children and adolescents. Strategies for addressing these problems in the classroom will be highlighted. Some of the topics that will be presented include:
  • Overview of mental health problems in children and teens
  • The impact of trauma on children in the classroom
  • Mood and Anxiety Disorders
  • AD/HD and classroom strategies to improve performance in the classroom
  • Self-injury & Eating Disorders
  • Behavioral issues and how best to handle them in the classroom
  • Resilience
