A STORY OF HOPE...just one example of the impact of our work
Nadia’s first words to me were “I don’t open up to anyone.”  In front of me sat a 14-year-old with her face covered behind her hair.  She reached out for help because she felt overwhelmed with the hardships of life and the obstacles she has faced growing up.  She had fresh cuts on her arms, a heart full of hurt, and a soul bare of hope.  As our time together progressed, her hair covered her face a little less, her eyes slowly began to shine a bit brighter, and her physical wounds began to fade along with the ones in her heart.
On our final day together, she had an entire list of hopes and dreams she could look forward to.  I have no doubt that she will attain anything she puts her mind to.  Nadia not only opened up to me, but more importantly to the opportunities and capabilities she possessed all along (name changed to protect confidentiality).

"I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the students, families, and staff at CPLA. CPLA has created a
wonderful community of professionals who guide and support their clinicians with resources, empowerment, and kindness.”

We are humbled by the words of a parent...

Counseling has helped me and my family 100%!!! It’s incredible the amount of progress I’ve seen in myself and my relationship with my children. I have been taught very valuable skills to help me in difficult situations. I am so beyond GRATEFUL for this opportunity and I cannot thank you enough!!!
- CPLA parent client,  2024-2025 school year

In the words of one of our counselors...
"My time at CPLA has been a deeply formative experience. The organization’s mission to provide accessible, culturally responsive mental health care has shaped the way I approach each session—with empathy, equity, and a trauma-informed lens. CPLA's commitment to healing and empowerment, along with the warmth and supportive environment it provided, gave me the foundation I needed to grow both as a clinician and as a person."
- Yumi Lee, CPLA Counselor, 2024-2025

Mental Health In Children

Mental health issues have been on the rise, with the COVID-19 pandemic increasing already high numbers of emotional and behavioral struggles amongst children. The CDC reports that 1 in 5 children have a mental disorder, but only 20% receive access to mental health services. Aggravating this is the decrease in the availability and accessibility of mental health clinicians. COVID-19 has also increased disparities in access to these services amongst children of lower socioeconomic statuses. CPLA is filling this gap by staffing its partner schools with skilled counselors who provide supportive services to struggling children and adolescents. Studies have shown that students who receive social-emotional support and prevention services achieve better academically in school. School mental health programs have significantly greater access to children and adolescents relative to community mental health services as evidenced by: 70-80% of children and adolescents who receive mental health services access those services in a school setting. Students who receive social-emotional support and prevention services achieve better academically in school.
