More information on Parent Counseling

What is Parent Counseling?
Parent counseling is a type of counseling where the goals are to improve your relationship with your child and strengthen your family bond. Being a parent is a joyful and challenging job. Parents are people too with worries and struggles. Most parents find that raising children stirs up feelings of love, fear, frustration, guilt, shame, and much more.

Parent counseling helps parents identify, heal and learn from past experiences and present situations as these may be affecting the way they connect with their children. When a parent has the help, support, and knowledge of how to resolve their own issues and how they impact their children, they can be better able to handle the challenges their children bring to their family.

A parent counselor will work with you to identify ways to reduce stress and help you better connect and interact with your children.

Parent counseling will also help parents find a way to better communicate with each other about parenting issues.

What Happens During Parent Counseling?
At the beginning of your time together, a parent counselor will get to know you and how your family works. Together you will decide what you want to accomplish: there may be different ways of handling things, stopping to do things and ways to keep calm. You may also learn how to prevent arguments and build a stronger connection with your children.

A parent counselor will help you develop tools you need to confront your fears, improve your communication, cope with stressful situations, resolve conflicts and successfully parent your child. Your parent counselor may assign "homework" to help you apply what you learn in sessions to your home life.

In addition, your counselor will assist you in working as a team with your child’s teachers, responding to any unhealthy or self-destructive behaviors, effectively communicating with your child, managing your child’s moods, and coping with stressful situations. You will improve your parenting skills, set achievable goals, and be better able to balance your parenting and work commitments.
